AUSTIN - Our first year to compete, we did not
even think that we were going to be in the competition the day before the competition
started. Three days later there was a 99% chance of us being in the competition, and all
of us thought, “that’s cool, we get to actually do something.” Not a single one of us,
including our instructor, knew what we were in for. We assigned people to find every way
to get points in the actual competing and in the competition as a whole, and started an
education team. Everyone was underway except for the actual robot team.
The competition was titled 2021: A Robot Odyssey, and involved getting
out of a box, up a ramp, collecting supplies and getting them your scoring area in three
minutes while three other robots were on the course collecting the same supplies that you
might want. The robot team started looking through designs, but it took them two weeks
before a single thing was even starting to be built. The designers struggled to figure
out what was actually going to be made and after the third week we ended up split into
two groups determined that their idea was the right one. The chassis was built and
working. The only thing that needed to be built were the arm and cargo bin.
